Notes on Adam Starcher

Adam Starcher was born 1802 (or 1808) to Philip and Mary Bush Starcher (or Philip and Rececca Mace Starcher). Note: His gravestone (pictured below) indicates birth in 1808. His age given on census records for 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 suggest a birth date of 1801 or 1802 (see below).

It should be noted that some discrepancy exists in the records available on the Internet concerning Philip Starcher and son Adam Starcher.

Don Norman's files lists two marriages for Philip Starcher, Mary Bush (m. 1801) and Rebecca Mace (m. 1805).

There may by a typographical error in the Don Norman listing for Philip Starcher. Don notes Adam Starcher as the son of Philip and his first wife, but erroneously (apparantly) identifies her as Rebecca Mace.
Philip Starcher, a son of Jacob and Barbary Starcher, was born in Hampshire County VA (WV) in 1779 and died in Calhoun County WV in 1865. Philip married Mary Bush in Harrison County VA December 5, 1801. Mary, a daughter of Adam and Margaret (Hagle) Bush, was born about 1782 and died in 1803 in Harrison County VA.

Philip married Rebecca Mace in Harrison County VA December 5, 1805. Rebecca, a daughter of Isaac and Mary Mace, was born in VA about 1779 and died in Calhoun County WV December 5, 1880.

Further clouding the issue, Don' Norman's information on Adam Starcher indicates a birth date of 1808 (rather than 1802) and indicates he is the son of Philip and Rebecca Mace.
Adam Starcher, a son of Philip and Rebecca (Mace) Starcher, was born in Harrison County VA (WV) December 25, 1808 and died in Calhoun County WV February 8, 1881. He married Phoebe Coger August 28, 1828 in Kanawha County VA (now Calhoun County, WV). Phoebe, a daughter of Peter and Mary (McElwain) Coger, was born in Franklin County VA January 6, 1814 and died February 13, 1899.

Another genealogical listing compiled by Linda Fluharty on line AT THIS LINK demonstrates some further inconsistancies:
1. Philip "Jepe" Starcher b. 1781, Hampshire Co., WV, occupation farmer, m.
        (1) 5 Dec 1801, in Harrison Co., WV, Mary Bush, b. 1789, MD, (daughter

1789, VA, (daughter of Isaac Mace). Philip died 18 ___ 1858, Calhoun

       2. i Henry E. Starcher b. 1807.
       3. ii Adam Starcher b. 25 Dec 1808.
       4. iii Jacob Starcher b. 1812.
       5. iv Abraham Starcher.
       6. v Mary "Polly" Starcher b. 1818.
       7. vi William "Billy Blue Head" Starcher b. 1819.
       8. vii Isaac Starcher b. 1823.
       9. viii Arnold Starcher b. 1825.
       10. ix Sarah Starcher.
This account indicates date of birth of Philip as 1781 rather than 1779, indicates the date of death of Philip's first wife Mary Bush as 1807 rather than 1803, and indicates 1808 as the birth date for Adam Starcher.

The 1850 Census for Gilmer County Virginia (West Virginia was not a state yet, and in 1850 Calhoun County had not been formed yet and was still part of Gilmer County) indicates:

Of note, the 1860 Federal Census for Calhoun County WV available AT THIS LINK indicates...
STARCHER, 868 Adam Starcher...59...Harrison...Farmer Phebe...53...Franklin Co., VA Thomas...25..Kanawha...Farmer William...23...Kanawha...Farmer Henry...21...Kanawha...Farmer Peter...19...Kanawha...Farmer Jehu...16...Kanawha...Farmer Mary...14...Kanawha Elizabeth...12...Kanawha Eliza HAINES...21...Kanawha...Seamstress Albert TOWNSEND...18...Kanawha...Farmer/Serving
The 1870 Federal census indicates...
Phebe...60...Keeping House...VA
Amos HOUCHIN...16...Farm Laborer...VA
John W. BAILEY...21...Farm Laborer...VA
The 1880 Federal census indicates...
Phebe...WF...74...Wife...Keeping House...VA...VA...VA
Rueben Gum...WM...30...Laborer...Wks on Farm...VA...VA...VA
If Adam Starcher was indeed age 59 in 1860, 68 in 1870, and 78 in 1880, this would be more in keeping with the 1802 birth date; and if he was born in 1802, he may likely be the son of Philip Starcher and Philip's first wife Mary Bush.

A photograph of the Adam Starcher home in Altizer, Calhoun County WV is available on the HurHerald AT THIS LINK. This home is mentioned in a narrative concerning George Gibson, found on Linda Fluharty's website AT THIS LINK.

Adam Starcher and wife Phoebe are buried in the Gibson Cemetery, located on Altizer-Adam Road near Arnoldsburg WV. This cemetery is located on what was once part of Adam's farm.

There is an excellent narrative regarding Adam Starcher on the HurHerald website maintained by Bob Weaver, CALHOUN'S FAMOUS CIVIL WAR HOMESTEAD: STARCHER-GIBSON HOUSE - Romance, Mayhem, Death, Gibson's Military Exploits Recalled.
